What is Publishing to Web Page?

One feature that makes MagiKey Family Tree unique is how we address the issue of printing. Instead of creating internal lists and reports, we publish them to HTML- the internet standard language, which can then be viewed using any internet browser. This provides a report that is in an easy to use format that can be helpful in multiple ways.

What are the advantages of HTML format?

  1. All reports are in a standard format.  
  2. All reports are saved as a file with extension .html so any computer can open them.
  3. Easily share reports via web pages or email.
  4. View reports in full size before printing.
  5. Eliminate the need to print just to view the report.
  6. Easily copy and paste into another program (like Word) for editing.
  7. Indexes are automatically linked to reports and a new GEDCOM file.

What can I do with "Published" reports?

  1. View reports without printing.  Instead of using a "Print Preview", all reports are viewable in the browser just like they will print. 
  2. View reports at a later time.  All reports are saved to your computer in the folder designated by you in the HTML format tab. This means that you can access the report at any time. 
  3. Share information via web pages or email.   Since the report is already in HTML format, uploading your file to your web page is easy.  You can send an .html file easily in email, and anyone can open the file.
  4. If selected, a new GEDCOM file is created with just the individuals in your report.  You do not have to manually export the information if you want to share your database.
  5. Print a Book.  Since the reports are in Modified Register it is easy to publish a book.  The formatting is already done for you.

How do I publish pages to my server?

MagiKey Family Tree has the option of automatically uploading the web pages to your web server if you wish. (This of course requires that you have access to a web server provided by an ISP. If you do not have a web server, MagiKey Family Tree can provide a space for you to post on their site.  See themagikey.com for more information.) To have MagiKey Family Tree automatically upload all necessary files, check the "FTP to server" box when generating the report. MagiKey Family Tree will prompt you for information about your web server.

MagiKey Family Tree also has the ability to generate a GEDCOM file referenced from the generated web pages, which contains only the information you chose to include on the reports (for example, without information on living individuals). This is the default behavior. If you wish to have no GEDCOM file, or link to your full GEDCOM file, you can change this when generating web pages by choosing Options, selecting the HTML tab, and changing the selection under "Link to GEDCOM file".
