Report Wizard (Report Menu)

What is the Report Wizard?

MagiKey Family Tree currently does not support printing directly from with in the program, except for the Descendancy Chart.  Instead it has a Report Wizard that generates the report in HTML format that web browsers (Netscape, Microsoft Explorer, Safari, Chome, etc.) can display. Use the print command from your web browser to print the various Web Page reports.

TIP: For more formatting options use Copy and Paste from within the browser page and paste into a Word Processor and then print from the other software.  This provides more flexibility than using a .pdf or custom report layout.

How do I Open the Report Wizard?

The Report Wizard is opened when you click on a report type in the Report Menu.  If you are creating a report without options (ie. timeline) then you will be directed to a Save File dialog, before the report opens in your default browser.

The Report Wizard lets you choose the following.

  1. Select the Individual Name
  2. Select the Filename Prefix (filename stored on your computer)
  3. FTP to Server (save on computer is default)
  4. Choose Format Options: General Layout, Date Display, Hyper-Links, and  FTP settings.

What are the different Report Options?

The most comprehensive report MagiKey Family Tree can do is to publish all (or any subset) of the records in your database as a series of cross-referenced "Descendants of (your ancestor's name here)" pages in Register format. (that is, the format used by the New England Historical & Genealogical Register), including an index.

How do I publish pages to my server?

MagiKey Family Tree has the option of automatically uploading the web pages to your web server if you wish. (This of course requires that you have access to a web server provided by an ISP.) To have MagiKey Family Tree automatically upload all necessary files, check the "FTP to server" box when generating the report. MagiKey Family Tree will prompt you for information about your web server.

MagiKey Family Tree also has the ability to generate a GEDCOM file referenced from the generated web pages, which contains only the information you chose to include on the reports (for example, without information on living individuals). This is the default behavior. If you wish to have no GEDCOM file, or link to your full GEDCOM file, you can change this when generating web pages by choosing Options, selecting the HTML tab, and changing the selection under "Link to GEDCOM file".
