Source Index (View Menu)

What is the Source Index?

It is a searchable list of all the people, books, or other records that supply evidence for your gathered data. A central feature of the Index is the reverse look-up capability.  This provides a flexible system to access all record types linked to a SOURCE.
Once you have selected a source record from the list, the following options are available:

edit a source show records with this source add a new source merge

Why is a Source Index helpful?

  1. The Source Index makes accessing and organizing source records quick and easy. It allows you to find which records are linked to a source. You can combine duplicate sources to streamline your database.
  2. The extensive sourcing capabilities allows for sourcing of verifiable events and also for every assumption that you record in a note.
  3. Sometimes knowing all the individuals linked to a particular source can be very beneficial.
For example: If you have already sourced several death events with the Kentucky Death Index, but did not add the specific file number at the time you entered your data. Instead of guessing which death records need the added data, you can use the Source Index to find each death record that was sourced with the Kentucky Death Index.

Tip:

Carefully record complete details about a source record when entering data so that the sourcing is accurate and linked properly.
