Repository Index (View Menu)

What is the Repository Index?

It is a searchable list of the locations, at which the actual records are stored. These records, known as sources, provide evidence for events, facts, or notes in your database. A repository may be: a library, Court House, house, Ancestry.com, etc. This index enables an inverse search capability, or in other words, to search backwards from a known REPOSITORY back to the SOURCE record.

Once you have selected a Repository record from the list, the following options are available:

edit this source   records   add repository     merge

Why is the Repository Index helpful?

  1. You can avoid repeating your efforts when returning to a library or courthouse by knowing which records you have previously used at that location.
  2. Reviewing the records that you have previously searched at a specific repository, may provide insight, when returning to the same repository to research other ancestors.
TIP: On the Edit Source Information form, click MORE>> to add a repository when creating a new source. This will automatically link the repository to the source.
